Havana Syndrome

In 2016, a mysterious, debilitating illness begins to afflict American diplomats and spies working abroad – first in Cuba, and then around the world. Victims report crippling neurological symptoms. Some describe the feeling of being hit by an invisible, directed pressure while they were stationed on government property, or sometimes standing in their own homes or hotel rooms. Is this bizarre illness the result of a weapon? Is it mass psychosis? Or something else entirely?

Award-winning journalists Jon Lee Anderson and Adam Entous take listeners to the heart of this saga in HAVANA SYNDROME, a new podcast from VICE World News.

    Captivating podcast
Bravo to the interviewers, writers, editors, producers, researchers and everyone involved in the creation of the Havana Syndrome podcast. This is a “top shelf” storytelling and listening experience. Captivating from beginning to end.

    Great show
I believe the evidence will show that the U.S. State Department's own bodyguard unit, the Diplomatic Security Service, is complicit in the Havana Syndrome attacks, probably at the request of Donald Trump, to give the administration an excuse to undo President Obama's rapprochement with Cuba.

    We need more
What a fascinating story that I wish there were more episodes for. Everyone involved in this were so professional and just great reporting. Thank you for all the agents who protect our country with their lives Vote blue so we have a “normal” country and a leader our president Biden who knows how to do his job and isn’t a traitor like Trump is. #votebiden2024. For the love of God man.

    This is Good, not great
This podcast has a very bro vibe, the sourcing isn’t particularly deep and there’s a lot of reliance on off the record interviews. I listened to this first then, after reading a review, went over to The Sound, not expecting to be particularly impressed or learn much new. Immediately, I learned something this Vice podcast hardly mentions— the relationship between sound waves and weaponry. I’m only on the third episode of The Sound: Mystery of Havana Syndrome, and I’ve already met more victims and more experts. This is good. That is stunning.

    Any chance for an update?
I listen to this 6 months after the initial airing and am dying for the latest info on this. Is there any chance the team will get back together for an analysis on the latest information?

    Truly awful
Search for ‘The Sound’ and listen to that one instead. This podcast is appropriately titled “Havana Syndrome” because it is truly painful to listen to.

What about the instances of this happening in America?
I have no experience with ruskies, but I was followed by a guy claiming to be employed by a sub contractor of homeland security in August 2013 who told me things were going to get really bad for me if I didn’t leave Austin. I asked what that meant and he kept repeating, with a sinister grin, “this gonna be fun! You won’t leave! This gonna be fun!” This happened shortly after I had reported criminal misconduct by tech support personnel while working at Emerson Process Management. In October of 2013 I was hit with a beam of pulsed radio frequency energy while sitting at my desk. My monitor actually started sparking in the upper left corner. These attacks happened on an off for months. After I left the company, I started experiencing them in my house. It’s basically the same symptoms as described by all of these diplomats. You can actually measure an increase in electromagnetic energy corresponding to the attacks and, after a decade of experience, it seems pretty clear that any wireless or IOT device can be weaponized by these John Wayne Gacy hacker types to implement them. Come out to my current residence if you want to put the psychogenic tabloid psychology nonsense to bed and experience Havana syndrome firsthand.

    This podcast is awesome
This podcast is great. The journalists do their job well. History is mixed in along with interviews of victims. Each episode has you wanting more!
  • StillWater1
    Super interesting
Well researched and presented podcast. It’s good to give people affected by this syndrome a voice and explain that they are not crazy or affected by mass hysteria.

    Interesting Listen
Good reporting on a very intriguing and complicated story.

    In-depth, Cold-War Background, Riveting
This was a major mystery, big news, conflicting accounts, then … it just faded away. If you want to know more, this is the podcast you’ve been waiting for. The journalists spent years investigating this, finding affected personnel willing to speak about their experiences, and writing about their findings, and all of it is now in this 8-part podcast.

    Great Podcast!
I’m not one to write many reviews but podcast was very well done. If someone does know what’s behind all of this will we ever find out? Very well researched and interesting. Lynn

    10 stars
I’ve never felt compelled to review a podcast before but this one is different. Besides being an interesting and important story, it’s so well researched and well explained. I can’t recommend it enough.

    Waste of Time
I had heard about this podcast and was eager to listen and learn about Havana Syndrome and to understand exactly what it was all about. What a complete waste of time! The beginning of the story was exactly the same at the end. No creditable facts or cause. Most of the information was based on hunches and hearsay. If you’re looking for answers, don’t waste your time.

    Addictive!!
Embarrassed to admit I binged the whole thing in a day…😊 I really hope to hear more from you both!

No new information at all, hasn’t added to the existing narrative
This is more of a re-verified summary of the existing reporting on this case, these guys haven’t really added anything new in terms of investigative reporting nor critical lens. I had hoped they would at least string together some of the loose and mysterious details in the Havana Syndrome saga, of which there are so very many. Their final theory(ies?) on the who/what/how/why were vague, unformulated and lackluster. Not the most artfully done podcast but it was easy listening. Interesting enough to have on in the background and kept me listening. I will say I found it extremely frustrating that Entous seemed to be legitimately skeptical of the existence of Havana Syndrome at all! Even after interviewing so many victims, seeing the debilitating effects first hand and being taught about it by some of the best medical professionals in the country. His final stance pretty much came off like, “I don’t understand how Havana Syndrome works at all so it’s probably not real”—which is such an educated older white guy reaction. I’m not sure he meant it that way but that is sure how it came off.

    Gripping
So interesting and lots of detail that wasn’t covered in the news. It’s like listening to a really good true crime podcast although with much larger implications. Couldn’t stop listening! Very concerning for sure, but a 5/5 for quality.

    Trash
Absolute garbage. No value whatsoever. Much better coverage elsewhere. Dont bother!!

    Less thank I expected
The series was certainly interesting but in the end I was disappointed. Perhaps unfairly, I expected some resolution of the controversy surrounding Havana Syndrome, or at least some solid deductions. Instead, after interviewing a number of highly credible HS victims over eight episodes, at least one of the hosts seemed doubtful of the whole narrative. This conclusion to the series, essentially a, “Well, you decide,” was quite a let down. I was also put off by trips to Havana, London, Vienna and one or two additional places which were little more than sightseeing and a waste of the listener’s time.

    CIA Bootlicking
Treating what these CIA people do as normal and rational and calling it an “attack “ over and over, with absolutely zero evidence is just mind numbing.

    Couldn’t stop listening
    Fascinating deep dive, well done!
  • LordeFell
    Almost tolerable reporting
There is a ton of fluff, the producer went to the voice acting school of Malcolm gladwell Easy to listen to on 2x speed and get through the whole series in 30 minutes Once you skip past the grating sound effects te reporting is almost tolerable!
  • masturk8
    Not recommended
    This is US Imperialist propaganda
  • RNLorenzo
    Intriguing and thoughtful
I appreciate how much care the hosts and producers put into interviewing. I also loved the snippets of voice memos during the last few episodes to show how communication happened to make the episode. The original music was also pretty bomb.

    Nothing groundbreaking
Well done podcast by talented journalists but offers very little that has not already been discussed and/or speculated by other sources

    Love it
    Really great listen!! So captivating.
  • LisaMwrites
    I’m captivated by this story
As a former government employee that spent time in Cuba supporting our government's work there over the years, I believe these people were targeted and intentionally injured. I also know for a fact that they were ignored by the C.I.A. despite their cries for help since it happens to all of us when we try to get care for duty related illnesses. Thank you for telling this story and shedding light on what’s really happening in our backyard and around the globe!
  • AWilty11
    So well done!
I blew through the first 4 episodes, and can’t wait for the next episode to come out! I’ve been watching this story unfold in the news, but hearing it laid out this way is just mind blowing. Highly recommend this podcast, so well done!
  • Paul e. Danger
Like hard boiled detective fiction but somehow…nonfiction!
Wonderfully laid out, like a detective novel, where you can’t stop listening. However, wildly, it’s real!
