Love Thy Neighbor: Four Days in Crown Heights That Changed New York

193

Thirty years ago, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights, a car accident set off four days of unrest. Two people died. Dozens were injured. Hundreds were arrested. In this Pineapple Street Studios series, journalist Collier Meyerson explores what came to be known as the “Crown Heights Riot.” It’s a story about immigration, New York City’s first Black mayor, the rise of Rudy Giuliani, and the Lubavitch Jewish and Caribbean-American communities sitting at the center of it all. To Meyerson, the Crown Heights Riot can help us unlock and understand so many of our modern dilemmas: from police violence and racism to the persistence of antisemitism.

    Every New Yorker Should Listen
A well-researched and well-sourced story that does something rather unique for a documentary about racism. It embraces the gray areas between opposing points of view. It’s also optimistic! The narrator is exceptional. Five episodes seemed to be the perfect length.

    Enjoyed podcast!!

    It’s an ad for Audacity
Mispronounced words throughout the episodes. Kihpa, Rebbe, Lubavitcher mispronounced first three episodes. Might be worth paying for, except you have to question question the amount of first hand research research done. Couldn’t have spoken to one Jew without learning the correct pronunciations BEFORE recording. So, without much research done, not sure if it’s journalism.

Great for fans of contemporary history
This is one of those intriguing stories form contemporary history that is forgotten about outside of where it happened. The writers did a great job including the perspective of both sides. Easy-to-follow and sincere storytelling by the narrator. Loved it!

    Native New Yorker
As a native New Yorker raised in queens. That Jewish ambulance will not help non Jews they will let you bleed to death because they will not taint themselves with non Jewish blood. I once was lost in a Jewish neighborhood and no one would help me or speak to me because I am not Jewish. I was nothing but respectful but the Jewish community did not care because I am trash to them. This podcast was slightly more in defense of the Jewish community. It was not neutral at all.

    Incredible nuanced storytelling
I appreciated the host’s personal connections to the communities in conflict and how she didn’t seek to simplify it, but to share the variety of opinions. I understand more now than I previously did about the many layers to the conflict and learned so much about the role of the city in the lead up to and fall out from the riot. I look forward to more nuanced storytelling from the host!

    About What You Would Expect
The host, torn between two worlds an struggling with her identity, does a mediocre job producing this revisionist history. Her anti-police rhetoric on full display; she fails to address the root cause of the destructive conflict, and places the blame squarely at the feet of our protectors. “Love thy neighbor”, except if they wear a uniform.

Okay Story - Hard to listen to this narrator
The story was pretty interesting but it is REALLY hard to listen to this host.

    Informative
This was a very informative podcast which told a story I’ve never heard of. Although the host did her best to tell an objective story, I somewhat felt her bias in favor of the Jewish community in my opinion

    Excellent!
The depth of the research, the profound empathy and heart in the storytelling, the embrace of nuance — I’m so glad THIS is how I’m learning the extensive history of this neighborhood. I’ve been telling everyone I know to listen.

    Disappointed.
As soon as I saw the advertisement for the podcast I stopped and started to listen since I live in the crown heights community and always wondered what the other side felt. I feel like the opportunity was missed on truly representing the hassidik side of the story and how they feel and live which can bring an understanding to the hassidik fears and way of life.

Instantly One Of My Favorite Podcast
As a NYer for all my life (I’m in my late 30s), I never knew the full story of what transpired in Crown Heights in 1991. I have family in Crown Heights and spent most of my adolescent life there growing up with my aunts, uncles, and cousins in Crown Heights and I would always ask about the tension in the community and it was always brushed off with the notion that the black community and Jewish community just do not “mesh”. After listening to this great podcast, I feel as though I finally have the context. Additionally, I was shocked when I attempted to do my own research at how scarce the information is regarding this sad tragic event in NY history. Almost as though there was a rug that it was nicely swept under. Collier Meyerson impressed me with not only the informative information but the relation to her own experience and personal life. I will definitely be on the look out from more from her as my only complaint is I wanted to hear and learn more! Collier Meyerson you have a new fan in me and I will be on the lookout for not only more podcast but any appearances you may have because I just have so much more I want to learn and ask from you!

    Binged on Audacy app
I’ve already listened to the whole series and was fascinated by it. I learned so much– it was a balanced, interesting, thoughtful, and expansive story. I appreciated how far back the series goes in history to contextualize the riot, and the present. Really great reporting and well told!
