Mrs. Filko 😊SO HelpfulI started listening to the podcast the middle of last year and each episode I’ve listened to, I’ve learned something and you have affirmed things I’m already doing. Episodes that stand out are; using evaluations to better understand our learners with Katy Vassar, the importance of scaffolding in decoding and alternatives to double-dosing in dyslexia intervention. Thank you so much for being practical in your approach to helping those with dyslexia and the people who serve and love them. 🩷

KatiegbearThank you!I have been listening since the very first episode and I’d like to say THANK YOU!!!! I learn, laugh, and nod in agreement through each episode. Listening to each episode supports my practice of structured literacy, motivates to be explicit, prescriptive, and diagnostic, and to give each of my students my best effort. You mentioned in this last episode how many of us feel like we out there alone; this is true to my experience and your podcast helps me feel connected and to know that what I am doing is the right approach to helping students with dyslexia become better readers and writers.

ReadingfoxThe “D” WordAt the public school in my area they aren’t allowed to use the “D” word. This is so important. Thanks for sharing all the info. I have a question. I tutor a 7 almost 8 year old boy (his mom won’t share why he struggles). We have been working over a year on learning the alphabet and letter sounds. He can now identify the letters by sound but cannot tell me all their names. We are beginning to blend these sounds together and segmenting words. When we make words he will say ‘hat starts with a /h/ house’ using the letter sound and key word. In my 27 years of working with struggling readers I have never had a child that can’t remember the names of the letters, but we are pushing onward to reading and spelling! I’d love to hear any suggestions you might have. I’ve tried a lot of different approaches so am anxious to see what you might suggest.

I can’t thank you enough and look forward to your future episodes!

lwyoungAlways learn something new!As an Orton Gillingham practitioner who works outside the classroom, I am always listening to your podcast as I am driving school to school. I am always astounded by the wealth of information that you have to share! I was most inspired by your recent podcast. I had not thought about encouraging my students to become advocates for themselves, but your podcast inspired me to do so. Dyslexia is so individualized and complex. It is so helpful to be able to listen and “relisten” to your podcast episodes! Thank you!!

strongreadersFantastic Resource!!I just discovered the podcast & WOW!! I can’t thank you enough for including the needs of older students! What a lifeline this is! As a teacher of older high schoolers I cannot thank you enough for compiling these resources. It’s invaluable! It’s so hard to find research, strategies, resources, and curricula for our older kiddos that incorporate SOR. I can’t wait to listen to all the episodes. I’ve felt like I’m on an island and now I’ve just spied the rescue plane! You ladies rock! Lifesavers!

Codh21Thank you! Great podcastI just found your podcast and using it to help educate myself about the science of reading and dyslexia. While I have my masters on reading, dyslexia was not mentioned once nor the science of reading. I also believe especially now that social emotional needs need to be met more effectively through appropriate instruction for all students.

msmazursexplorersLove the metacognitionThank you for bringing up the ideas for sharing how the brain works with learners. Great book suggestions. There is a method in the ESL world for multilingual learners back in the day called CALLA. Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach that was really successful with my English learners in upper elementary grades. Meta cognitive strategies were a big part of that work. Awesome episode.
-

TeacherCindyExperts who are realI enjoyed hearing Stacy and Emily share what brought them to dyslexic students. These are educators who still maintain tutoring practices. To me that means they are the real deal, walking the walk. I look forward to hearing more about how we as adults in the lives of dyslexic students can make opportunities to build emotional resilience in our students who struggle. There is more to the art of tutoring than choosing the right practice words; Stacy and Emily are going to help us bring those needed heart supports to our lessons.
-
