Square Roots - THE Classic RPG Podcast

306

Square Roots is like a book club, but for classic RPGs! Each episode John, Matthew, Jim and Vanessa play through a chunkerino of one of your favorite RPGs, from Final Fantasy through Chrono Trigger. Are they experts? No. Are they qualified? Absolutely not. Are they good at RPGs? Probably not. But they're the fun kind of dumb, and that's what counts.

I remember playing FF7 in my dorm room and the various folk that watched and commented as I went. As I listen to Square Roots I’m reminded of this experience, only if by dorm mates were much MUCH more entertaining. Well done!

I don’t think I’ll go to Vegas anytime soon.
These guys are the group of people you wish you had a friendship with to talk to about and play games with when they were new.

    Perfect Video Game Podcast
Absolutely adore this group of friends who met through some kind of online meme forum and decided to start a podcast together. The group and their format is incredibly accessible, starting each episode with a check in of their lives (the “Level Up” segment) through a detailed analysis of gameplay (“Quest Log” or its game specific version) and ending with an analysis (“Squarely Against”). You can tell the group really loves each other and gaming and you will enjoy being part of their family. I started back from the beginning and have enjoyed (or suffered along with, for entries covering - say - The Bard's Tale) every step of the podcast. But genuinely you can start with a series you know well and jump in to the podcast whenever. Please check it out!

    5-star gaming podcast
1-star taskmaster podcast. Every time Vanessa tries to talk about taskmaster they stop her. Disappointing.

    Mixed Bag
This is more of a podcast where four (if Matt decides to show up) people loosely discuss and most complain about old games. If they play through a game you love, just keep in mind that they don’t really delve into the lore of the games so half the time they complain about plot or gameplay, it’s from a place of seemingly willful ignorance so don’t take it to heart. They also make liberal use of “the power of Andraste” (cheats) and a couple of them will still quit because they can’t beat the game. I give the “level up” segments a few minutes and if they drag on I just skip ahead to the “quest log” portion. If Johnny and Vanessa are the only two hosts on that episode, just skip it and save yourself the 2+ hours because most of it is them rambling on about nonsense that has nothing to do with the game. If you want a gaming podcast to use as background noise while you clean or go for a walk, this is it. They seem to be having fun with it.

    Good
For a bunch of chugey Gen X’ers who want to be millennials.

Ignorant and full of political pandering
These kids know absolutely nothing about the games they play and claim to love. They’d rather just read the Wikipedia article and pretend to be big fans. They’d much rather insert their bog standard leftist insanity into the discussion than discuss the game (the Guado from FFX is a race, NOT a racist term. Mika was meant to sound like a decrepit old man, NOT a racist Asian caricature) they’d rather whine and look for something to be offended over than just enjoy these classic games. There are much better nostalgic gaming podcasts out there than wasting your time with these clowns.

    What a fun show
After so many years they’ve really dug into their characters on the show. They let you vote for topics sometimes and mostly stick to classic RPGs. Probably the best podcast for final fantasy // Sam Elliott kink-splaining. High energy and natural rapport between cohosts. This is one of those rare podcasts that make you feel like you’re part of their friend group. Like a book-club for your ear balls. Also I guess they interview Hollywood directors sometimes now? I squoot almost every night!!

A must-listen for any RPG fans
I love these people! Consistently hilarious and entertaining. It's so fun to listen to them play through a bunch of my favorite games of all time. I am genuinely laughing out loud at work as I listen to them. I plan to subscribe to their Patreon to get that sweet bonus content, plus they totally deserve $5 a month for this entertainment.

    Funny great chemistry
Great humor. I enjoy listening to the games that I have previously played or are currently playing through.

A few hiccups but mostly great!
Hey guys! Just wanted to say really great podcast! I’ve slowly been working my way through the season and am currently on the Rogue Galaxy season. So far the jokes are great, the chemistry between hosts is fun, and for the most part the commentary about the game is entertaining. My only criticism is that the hosts don’t seem that interested in actually experiencing the plot or enjoying the characters and would rather make jokes about how the game “doesn’t make sense”. I get that jrpg as can be a bit ambiguous sometimes, but it It’s honestly feels like listening to someone sleep through a film and then complaining that it didn’t make sense. At least humor the game a little. Other than that, grade A work and I plan to be a patron once I catch all the way up!

    I’m roundly for this podcast.
Without Square Roots I don’t know how I would have made it through quarantine. I started listening in March and since then, have worked my way through most of their back catalogue, and played a handful of games along with them. Thanks to the Squooters I played FF10, 10-2, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and more for the first time. They have reignited my love for video games, classic RPGs and for podcasts. If I had to pick my best end-game party I know that Jim, John, Matt and Vanessa would be my first choice. P.S. The Patreon is the first real boss of the game and the Facebook Group is a little baby fresh eyes.

    Love this show!
I have been listening for a few years now and there isn’t a season of it that I don’t love. This is a show that you can really jump in on any season and instantly be entertained. The hosts are all genuine and really work well together. Sheev the Incel is one of my favorite reoccurring characters. I look forward to Monday mornings because of Square Roots!

    Meanwhile, in my mom’s basement
See subject. This is the best criteria for a gaming podcast. Star Trek references? Check! Guy with a lisp? Check! Cosplaying references? Check! Informative, fun. It may be a bit of a narrow scope, but this is a fun listen.

    Well I pay monthly
My favorite alert every week is when the new episode drops. Even when the crew is covering RPGs I’ve never played nor want to play I tune in just for the level ups. Vanessa’s mysterious charismatic relatability is a plus, and johns niche LGBTQ+ perspective is surprisingly appreciated. I love this podcast and am proud to be a patron. As a horror lover/jrpg fanatic the Scare Roots spin off episodes are the discussions I never knew I needed but hope get released more often!!

    This podcast is fun
If you like RPGs, or even if you don’t (probably) this podcast is super fun. The hosts are great the story recaps are fun and the music they find for the games is always good. So you should give it a listen. Because not listening is like receiving a old yellering in the wasteland.

    Wonderful RPG podcast
I love RPGs and hearing people talk about them that are passionate and entertaining. If that’s your jam, then listen to this podcast. I’m a patron and it’s worth every dollar. Well done.

    Funny and fun
If these guys are talking about an RPG you have played, give it a run. Everyone on the show has a good sense of humor and it is fun to relive (or find out stuff you may not have done in) your favorite RPG.
  • Parallaxion
    Fallout discussion...
I feel old as I listen to 3 20-somethings talk about how they’d ruin an historic game with tutorials; and how they don’t understand the UI... what you’re holding in each hand is a staple of RPGs! They are then in awe of the random scripted events that make playing the game a unique experience, so that’s good... but they seemed confused... whatever glad they are playing it.

    Enjoyable VG 'Book Club'
This group has great chemistry together, and their passion for games shines through each episode. I have enjoyed remembering games I played years ago, and their perspectives on older titles is incredibly entertaining. I started listening to an episode that covered one of my favorite games, and by the end, I knew I'd be listening to their entire backlog, regardless of whether or not I played the featured game. Highly recommend!

    Great story!!!
Might I suggest Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines? It’s getting a sequel, so this might be a fun time to do it!

    Level up!
I just caught up with the podcast and I enjoyed it incredibly! I was thinking about joining the patreon. I really like your guys level up section and I was bummed when I heard you guys aren’t going to do it for the patreon anymore. Thanks for the hours upon hours of enjoyment, I’m probably going to start from Final Fantasy IX again. Keep up the good work! -Jared

    Awesome podcast
Love these guys! They’re funny and I like their insight on these games. I just recently found them and I’ll keep on listening till they get tired of doing this or each other lol. Keep up the good work 👍🏽

    A good time

    Listen and level up!
This is good, good fun. Follow our heroes, Jim Banks, John Brandon, Matthew van Zandt, and the mysterious one known simply as “Vanessa”, as they delve back into the rpg catalogue and bring the funny. Come for the (sometimes) on-topic discussions, stay for the sound of four friends shooting the breeze and having a great time while they each play the game and give their own impressions, strategies, criticisms, and snark.

    How I love The
This podscast is a hard look at some of the greatest RPG's ever made. They tell it how it is in a way that is funny, thought provoking, and quite frankly out of left field. If you need a good laugh, a good cry, and a moment of introspection from a cast of silly folks. This pod cast is for you. John, Jim, Matthew, and Vanessa are wonderful. Thank you for helping me get through my work day.
  • Bobohotep
    Level Up!
After hearing one of the cast members plug and describe the show on an episode of VGA, it definitely sounded like something that was in My wheelhouse. That day and the following few days i chewed through the intro and all the episodes on final Fantasy IX. The show has only gotten better with the wit and comedic timing of Vanessa. Love the show ya’ll. Keep up the great work. Also Baby Fresh Eyes is the scariest horror character since the ghostly STD in it follows.

    leveling up!!!
i started late suscribing to this podcast and to start from the first episode but i didnt care. I love this podcast. the insightfullness and the opinions lifted my spirit by making me laugh my face off. this podcast is a true level up.

    5 Stars
It doesn’t seem to save my 5 star rating so I’m writing a review to see if that helps.
  • Hurrican3RR
    Talk about the game.
I really like the podcast and everyone on it, but if you guys completely cut out the level up section at the beginning that would be A okay with me. It runs way to long and I just really wanna hear about the video game that you guys have been playing. You interrupt each other consistently and just when you’re about to get into an important section of the game, someone will interrupt and completely derail the conversation.

Come in like a baby fresh eyes
This podcast is great! The hosts are charming and hilarious. Jim Banks is too fast at games (bad at fable, great at Kraken Dad Jokes), Matthew Van Zandt speaks in farts and burbs (Bad at Grandia; great at fable) , Vanessa is great at identifying whales, and John Brandon is a legend in the Mario Bros seen and tamer of bears. In all seriousness this podcast and it’s surrounding community are spectacular and need your attention ASAP! Trust me I’m a marine biologist!

    Good hosts. Nice pod.
I jumped on board while they were going through Chrono Trigger and have stuck around since. They've covered RPGs I didn't know existed and inspired me to go check them out. The hosts all have great chemistry and it's clear they love doing this. They can ramble on at times, but it's part of their charm, since in real life we tend to ramble too!

    The sexiest grandma of podcasts!
A fun little podcast where chunkerinos and chunkerinas of RPG games are discussed in the utmost professional of ways. This is a straight shooting, brass tax, Matt never making his cohosts uncomfortable kind of podcast. Listen to it all all your devices at once for an amazing surround sound experience!

Come for the RPGs, stay for the Belome jokes
This is a must listen for RPG fans. The hosts are great and each brings their own touch. They definitely have improved their chemistry and the format for the episodes over time, especially with the edition of Vanessa, but it has always been entertaining. So give it a try!

    Definitive RPG podcast
Whether you’re listening for the hilarious commentary on many of your favorite rpgs or just tuning in for the fantastic back and forth between the four hosts, there is tons to keep you coming back each week. Playing along with the games as they play each week and tuning in has become a highlight of my week. One of the best podcasts around, definitely give it a shot.

Wholesome boner jokes for the whole family
This podcast covers it all, from pop culture, cooking, video games, boner jokes, life tips, and science. It’s mostly about video games and boner jokes though, and it’s terrific.
  • Loksr
The best RPG podcast out there!
This podcast is a fantastic way to experience these (usually classic) games. The hosts have excellent chemistry together, and are simultaneously hilarious and insightful in their discussions. A strong recommend for anyone looking to vicariously enjoy some wonderful RPGs, or to play along with the hosts as they book club their way through these games one chunkerino at a time!

Don't Worry Matt, I get All Of Your Wheel Of Time References
Do you love Classic RPGs? Retorical question, of course you do! Do you love the kind of humor that happens when you sit around with a group of friends? Sure you do! So listen to this podcast! You can even play along! Except for The Bard's Tale episodes. Don't play along with that part. Just listen. Jim, Matt, John, and Vanessa are fantastically entertaining people even when when no one gets Matt's infrequent Wheel of Time references [insert tangent about needing a good Wheel of Time RPG]. For real though, this podcast will keep you endlessly entertained. If you need more encouragement to listen, well, I downloaded iTunes just so I could leave this review. So there's that.
