Longshot: Payback

184

In 2019, U.S. women’s national soccer team striker Jessica McDonald capped a World Cup journey few could have imagined. A teen runaway who became a single mom, McDonald tells The Charlotte Observer and Raleigh News & Observer for the first time how she rose from a broken home in Phoenix to the pinnacle of sports in Lyon, France — and how today, she’s using her voice to battle systemic inequalities in soccer, including as part of the U.S. women’s national team’s recent settlement in their landmark fight for equal pay. Hosted by Alex Andrejev.

    Local journalism lives on!
Excellent journalism from local newsrooms that have significant national resonance! Highly recommend, particularly the most recent season; Payback! Love to see voices that aren’t normally spotlit getting some national attention!

    Love this story!
Jessica MacDonald is always a player I’ve looked up to, and this story gives such a great insight into her journey. Great podcast!

    Too many sound effects.
The “changing channel” sound effect is used way too much. Very annoying.

    Good but so many Ads
I think a third of each episode are commercials. No thanks.

    Commercial heavy!
Great content. Unfortunate story of a great ball player. More commercials than any podcast i listen to! Gets old quick.

    What If...Maybe...If...Perhaps...Nothing
This is a very very tragic story. Extremely talented young man discarded by the NFL, gracious family, and transforming community. Conjecture and implications are used looking to prove a murder by police that might have not happened. Even I, a liberal thinker, became upset by this reporter’s irresponsible lack of regard for this family and community -trying to ignite a fire. This podcast is most interesting from a historical view. The reporter is very monotone, lacks color - oh, and did I mention lacks facts?

    Zero stars
Umm what a terrible description. What does his race or the race of the people in city have to do what his death? What a insensitive description that is disrespectful to his surviving relatives. Do better.

    Lame, Low Budget Podcast
A lame, low budget podcast trying to cash in on the murder podcast genre. Very disappointing podcast filled with hearsay, insinuation, rumor, and fallacious accusations from aggrieved family members.

    Good. But,......
Wished host would’ve been a tiny bit better about releasing the interviews where people didn’t want revealed. Or, used anonymity. I think it’s a story that should’ve been told. Feel for the victim and his friends and family. Go Colts!

    It’s just OK
The show has potential and with the mindless content that's out there, this is a welcomed-change. However the narrator could definitely use a cup of coffee. I don’t know that there is another genre that has exploded like the true crime genre and everyone and their mother is now a criminologist. I have a Master’s in Criminal Justice, and there’s quite a bit more to it than just listening to a podcast, and having listened to a ton of these true crime podcasts, I find that all too often there are people who may have an interest in the topic in general, but they don’t really give much substance to the topic that they’re covering. My favorite podcasts are the ones that have as many of the original cast of characters (police, first responders, victim/ofender, lawyers, etc etc) as possible because they are the ones that really have something to say on the subject. The podcaster themselves may have a little extra to add, but not much. That being said, after Im done listening to this podcast in full, I will come back and update this review, but for now, I’ll give this a 3/5. Its got potential, but as of now, it doesn’t really separate itself from the pile of junk out there very much.

    Potential Goes Nowhere
This started off really promising, but I ended this with little more insight than where I started it. No one ultimately talks, potential records/information remain missing or maybe destroyed, and there’s no conclusion or questions answered. I thought this might take on a true crime element, but it was a drawn out history with a lot of commercials. Not the right podcast for me.

    Family town
My father and all of his relatives are from Lancaster. The Sistare Family. I was a kid when this happened.

    Enjoyable with few facts
I started out really enjoying the podcast. However, it became very clear quickly that there seemed to be very very little pointing to anything but the reported facts other than he was black in the south, of corse the racist cops killed him. On the other hand, there seems ample information pointing to his mental instability, impulsive anger, and drug problems that could lend credence to abnormal actions. With all the work the podcaster obviously put into it, you would think he would actually have at least something to support what he is saying. He literally comes with nothing.

Good but would like to make a suggestion...
I am really enjoying this Podcast...the content and story line is excellent. I am from Maryland and was a huge Colt fan before they left for Indianapolis and my Wife is from York, SC so we both have connections to this story. As one of my learned friends previously mentioned the parts of the Podcast where people will not go on the record with their voice needs to be changed/scrapped/or amended. In other Podcasts when this situation arises they Podcast will either summarize the interview or hire actors to act out the interactions. For me personally it’s aggravating listening to the Podcaster basically talking to himself. Maybe it’s a budgetary thing but other than that I am thoroughly enjoying the Podcast. Thanks Edgar A. Interesting content, poor entertainment
I think this would’ve been an incredible article series, but I don’t want to hear the narrator talking to himself and sounding like he’s leading his sources because no one will talk on the record. The podcast touches on deep questions, but can’t actually dig into them because no one will speak to the narrator. Great premise, fatally flawed execution. I had to stop listening after only a few episodes.

Sad story with rich true history of SC
I am a northerner living in the midlands SC not far from where this story comes. This story is both incredibly sad yet puts a name and place to SC history.

    Love the descriptions of Lancaster
I’m sorry to say I never knew about Butch Duncan, although I know and love his family. He died before I was born. The first episode was fascinating - captured Lancaster perfectly.

    What happened‽
Why was JD there? Whose gun was it? Was the gun immediately secured as evidence? Is the gun used still being held as evidence? Who else was in the building? How soon was an ambulance called? Were phone records examined? Who was the PD supervisor at the time of shooting? Was JD’s body moved? Were everyone’s hands tested for GSR? How soon was his family notified? Was there an autopsy? Were his organs intact? This death of a black man could have happened today at the hands of police & have an organized cover up.

    Story well told
Bret McCormick is a gifted journalist and storyteller. Fascinating to hear.

    Race baiting
All the WHINING about HOW IT COULD STILL HAPPEN TODAY is pure race baiting!! Trying to cash in on victim marching...
  • VMA0012
    Not bad- too many commercials
I enjoy the podcast, at least the first episode, but SOOO many commercials
  • Fellintooblivion
    Race baiting garbage
Jim Duncan was a mentally ill man probably suffering from what we now recognize as CTE after a punishing career in college and professional football. His story is a tragedy but it has nothing to do with race and it’s absolutely disgusting that his death is being used to push an agenda as people rush to cash in on the current social climate by dredging up every death if a black man where a white man was in the same room no matter how many decades they have to go back in time. Butch died almost fifty years ago, let the man, and his name, rest in peace.
