Friendly Fire

1,411

A history podcast with a twist: Friendly Fire uses war movies as a point of entry on not only the history of war, but the history of how societies think about war. John Roderick, Adam Pranica and Benjamin Ahr Harrison dissect movies from throughout the history of cinema, talk about film production, pedantic quibbles with costumes and airplanes, and keep you laughing the entire time.

    Social Media is Dumb
The podcast is great, I don’t care what anyone says on social media… it’s not real life

    It’s got bean dad though
Loved the pod but bean dad is in this one you guys. This one’s got bean dad, so that’s something.

    4/5 War Movies
I saw a lot of great films I never would have without this podcast, so for that I’m thankful. It’s a shame they cancelled themselves due to silly stuff on Twitter. My guys ranked: Adam (the Everyman) John (the Historian) Ben (the Pedant)

Wish it was back!!! Quicks the word and sharps the action.
Love and miss the podcast. The two younger dudes can definitely get cringy with the uwu woke stuff but over all really funny and entertaining. Definitely does feel like a conversation amongst friends.

    Wished they’d more war movies.
Some I’ve seen like The Thin Red Line, MacArthur and Red Tails. Since I’d written a post on the Friendly Fire Podcast’s subreddit a couple years back, but has been privated once the podcast ended.

    Late to the war
I love this podcast & discovered it after it was off the air. There are so many more war movies to discover & I love this trio’s takes on them & the silly jokes too. Please bring it back🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    Stolen Valor-holes
These duchenerds shouldn’t be allowed to watch war movies let alone discuss them after the spineless demonstration of cowardice they put on. I hope they all fall face first into a punji trap of dicks.

    Great podcast that must return!
I only discovered this podcast a year after they stopped making new episodes and love it! The crew needs to return and review more movies they missed, like Breaker Morant (great) and Battle of the Bulge (awful).

    No winners in culture war
The inevitability of this show’s collapse is as saddening as it is maddening. I can’t blame the non-John’s involved in this project for walking away. Much of my culture has devolved into a purity movement in response to the rising power of the right. Anybody who isn’t avowedly, demonstratively and I think critically, performatively anti-fill-in-your-culture-war-issue-here is suspected of crypto fascism. It’s the left’s McCarthyism. With ones politics so tied up with ones economics (especially in the media world), the reasonable choice was to jettison John. It would’ve been risking career suicide not to. Adam, Ben and Max Fun have mouths to feed; work that needs to be done. Gambling that all to protect the second career of an idiosyncratic and inflammatory aging ex-rocker doesn’t make sense. I wish it hadn’t come to this. The Culture needs to decide if winning battles against sus-semi-celebrities is worth losing the war of hearts and minds.

    Bring it back!
Like I said, bring it back!

    Not bad, but…
Would be much better without the gratuitous swearing and vulgar language which is greatly distracting.

    Bring this back
I would listen to John do this podcast alone. Bring it back without the sci-fi nerds.

It’s been long enough. Get over it. Bring this back!!!

    Please come back
Has enough time passed that cancel culture has forgotten about Rodderick’s alleged misdeeds so we can get this pod back up and running? I re-listen to this quite a bit and it seems I’m not alone in that, nor alone in wanting the trio to return to “casting pod”.

    Bring it back!
I discovered this pod just after it ended. Bring it back! Bring it back!

    Cowardice under fire
We all know why the show was cancelled. Zero stars for the shameful way Max Fun threw John under the bus for what was nothing more an idiotic faux Twitter scandal. In the end, the courage of Adam, Ben and Jesse Thorn didn’t amount to a hill of beans.
  • Soshield
I love those guys, but this is hypocrisy
Cancelling this show is a mistake. MaxFun probably doesn’t make any money from it, but the fans will remember this. Ben and Adam make similarly bad (but less explicit) jokes that poke fun at the worst things humanity is capable of on their other podcasts, but they don’t get punished, nor should they be. None of these guys are bad people, but the twitter mob has spoken and corporate decided to cut their losses and discontinue this great show. Anyone that has ever listen to Road Work or Rodrick on the Line knows that John is a good father who dotes on his daughter constantly. Bring the show back.

    Love it!
One of the best podcasts out there! Love it! Thank you John, Adam, and Ben
  • Wpjs
    Worth a listen but
These guys have really good insights and discussions on the films, but like too many podcasters they lean left and can not resist trashing conservative thought. Too bad. That said, I look past the liberal comments and respect there take on these classic films.

The kind of discussion we need in cinema
I miss this pod. John being on the show was a huge appeal for me and I have faith in them as a decent person. I listen to it repeatedly because the conversation gets so much bigger and deeper than the film itself or how it was made, even though those factors are covered. I listen to movies I haven’t seen because they eloquently and stylishly surmise each film in the monologue at the beginning it feels like I’m in on the conversation they have together. I enjoy the different segments and anticipate them in each episode. Strongly recommend this one!

    Please bring this pod back

    My all-time favorite podcast
One of the most intelligent and hilarious takes on history and foreign policy seen through the lens of war movies. It’s such a shame that this podcast was retired prematurely — the show provides a valuable lesson regarding the perils of capitulation in the face of the social media scandal of the day.

    Great Podcast
I miss this show. I give the show all 5 Rambos.

    So so
As a veteran and military history fan, I had a lot of hope for this podcast. It is okay, but would be much better if they had a veteran in the mix to provide some insights on military culture. I find that they miss the boat on a few things that would be basic to someone with some GI experience. I did not listen to it enough to develop any loyalty to the hosts and can’t share in the outrage at the show’s demise.

    Roderick got fragged
The chemistry between these three men - two pasty nerds and a hirsute renaissance wizard - is what keeps me coming back to a podcast about movies I’ve never seen. I look forward to this every week and also support them for the Porkchop episode. I suggest you do the same if you like this as much as I do. UPDATE: Roderick got fragged by the two kids because he is not neuro typical and they are not as tolerant as they like to signal. This was my absolute favorite podcast of all time and was perhaps too good to be true.
  • Mr.AwesomeSauce8
    A disgusting, hypocritical shame
Literally the best podcast in existence cancelled due to faux outrage over a host's self parody, nonsensically impuned as "child abuse," and dropped by an organization founded by a man who has a strange history with the abusive treatment of his own child. Amazing world we live in. I'm dropping every podcast from "Max Fun." See ya. Over and out.
  • Skinny Timmy71
    I will miss this
This was a great podcast. The only podcast that I found laugh-out-loud funny as well as intelligent and insightful. They reviewed some of my all-time favorite movies and led me to discover new ones. Now, because of some Twitter posts taken out of context and the ensuing PC mob we’ve lost it. What a shame. I will sorely miss these guys. And if you are happy with the demise of this podcast because of John’s actions then perhaps you can guide me to another podcast. A PC acceptable one where everyone carefully tows the line and never offends anyone. A podcast where no one involved has ever posted or uttered a single inflammatory statement in their entire lives. Please let me know because I would love to discover what is probably the most boring podcast on the planet. Jerks.

    In Memoriam
I’ve genuinely enjoyed the podcast through out the run. I completely understand the decision to call it off but if you ever decide to bring it back, you’d absolutely be falling on at least one set of delighted ears. Thank you for so many hours of great content guys.

    Run by White Supremacist
John Roderick is an actual white supremacist and anti Semitic. He also ab**ed his daughter and bragged about it on Twitter. He deleted his Twitter once people pointed out his abuse. I’ll take my history from people who ARENT pieces of chit.

    Irony
The irony of commenters decrying “cancel culture” as they cancel their MaxFun memberships.

    Ok...
Well I have been enjoying this show and am late to the party just to find out it’s over already. Not gonna say who was right or wrong because I don’t know enough about it I just know a show that has nothing to do with that is canceled. I do want to say hopefully in these times of putting people in their place we leave room for the offenders to learn and grow otherwise what’s the point? Teaching someone a lesson has no value if they don’t have a place to return home to once they’ve learned their lesson. Let’s not destroy ourselves in the quest for trying to do the right thing.

There is no better movie podcast
Quality analysis with a bit of humor from several different perspectives. Just listen.
  • johnsbetterthanyou
    You fired why we listened
Without John y’all aren’t worth listening and maximum fraud stands for cowardice. Went to war on a friend. And the gall of still running a podcast you had recorded after your egregious action is have your crap and eating it too
  • MisterCicero
    John
We really should stop acting like John wasn’t adversarial to his cohosts anyway. He spent years being rude and bullying his “friends” on the show, calling them spoiled snowflakes (often jokingly but just as often not) and critiquing their turns of phrase and opinions on the movies they all watched together. Hope Ben and Adam can find a way to move on and continue the show without him
  • JoshHolland58
    Disappointed
I will miss my Friday mornings... That being said I’ve pulled my support from max fun altogether. So tied of this cancel culture crap. Stand up for yourselves people, show compassion, be brave.

    Mob makes right
This was a great podcast, and something I looked forward to every week. I’m sad to see it go, but it’s a reminder of the people who you need to be wary of. Stand up for your friends, even when they screw up, especially when they screw up. Adam and Ben turned on John in an instant. They chose ideology over humanity, and history repeats:)
  • Andee917
    Bogus Cancel Culture
Really enjoyed the show, unsubscribing and removing my support for the handful of Max Fun shows I listened for their willingness to cave in to the wishes of the mob.
  • Chocolate and Tea
    I can’t even.
Been listening since the beginning because of the Greatest Gen podcast, but the way John Roderick was treated is inexcusable. (I am an educated liberal who has spent my career working for nonprofit organizations improving the world, not a shallow cancel-culture child.) Will never donate or listen to another MaxFun podcast again.
  • JimmyReed73
    Shame on you
Cowering to the PC police and having the PRODUCER come on to announce the end? Unprofessional and cowardly. Waste of a great show.
  • 1/2dan1066
    Adam & Ben
What can you say about Adam & Ben? They always gave off the impression of being petty, spineless worms, but I thought maybe it was just because of their nasal voices and regional accents. Sometimes first impressions are the most accurate. Some people truly have no souls. Bye bye, I can’t say I’ll miss you guys!
  • Ex_Berliner
Love the show, but cancelling my subscription
Stand up for your friend, guys, don’t cancel the show. Seriously, this was a perfect opportunity to address mental illness and how a person can treat and/or overcome it, and you blew it. What else is Maximum Fun all about, other than embracing people of all types? I didn’t realize that this excluded people with less-than-perfect pasts. I cried while I listened to the last “episode”. I cried for John, for Ben and Adam and Rob, for Max Fun, but mostly for the fans, who will be denied further episodes of this wonderful show, just because some jerk used the Wayback Machine to dredge up old tweets that by no means represent John’s current frame of mind. I know it can’t have been an easy choice to cancel Friendly Fire, but, seriously guys, grow a pair. I’m taking my pledge money elsewhere.

    Bummer ending to a podcast
Interesting discussions, great voices and knowledge... luckily there is a pretty big back catalog of episodes, since it just ended

I just found it! Love it!
I found the podcast Sep 2020, and have about 40 episodes left in the back catalogue to listen to them all. I don’t watch most of the movies, but it doesn’t matter to enjoying the show, I love it. I was very sad to hear you’re ending the show. I personally don’t care about John’s internet immolation. However, I had a jackass coworker who was really good at his job, so I think I get the problem, and honestly as good as that guy was at the job it was a relief when he left the company. For that reason Adam and Ben, I hope you can find some funny associate professor of military history at some podunk college who would love to watch these movies with you and point out the errors. Fingers crossed you find a way to come back!

What, you can’t stand by your friend. Or was The relationship so fake I shouldn’t have been listening in the first place? Im ashamed to have donated to you monthly. you made robs tell us because you two didn’t have the balls to chastise your “friend”in public? couldn’t do it yourselfs huh. Started donating 5$ a month 3 years ago because of “The Greatest Generation”. Upped it to 10$ in 2020 because of friendly fire. I’ll now be taking it down to zero. The reason: I can’t stand people who won’t stand for each other.

    This is craziness.
Don’t let a bunch of twitter nonsense ruin this great show!

Please bring it back. Hasn’t the past year taken enough from us already?
John Roderick, one of the hosts of Friendly Fire, has been pilloried on Twitter for a semi-fictional humor piece he posted about his daughter learning to use a can opener by trial and error. As a consequence of the ignorant, decontextualized backlash against John by people who lack the intelligence or curiosity to recognize farce when they see it, I now have been robbed of future episodes of this podcast, one of the few things that brings joy to my life and cuts through the miasma of real cruelty, inhumanity and self-centeredness that pervades society and public discourse today. I’m leaving a five star review for this show in hopes it will encourage people to explore its back catalog and acquaint themselves with the with the John they never bothered to get to know: a witty and whip-smart man of the world with a generous spirit and real empathy for those who are marginalized in our society. Oh, and Ben and Adam are okay, too ;) Seriously, though, this is a phenomenal podcast - tons of fun, occasionally informational, and, most importantly, brimming with chemistry between the hosts. If we never get another one I will remain forever grateful for what we got. Thanks, guys!
